Hints on searching
- By default, this utility finds indexed words that match or contain the searched word. The asterisk (*) is the only permitted wildcard, and only at the end of the search string. The addition of the asterisk has the effect of searching for all words that contain a string (not necessarily a full word) followed by at least one alphanumerical character. It is best used either for searching all inflected forms of a word or any word with a given root.
- The Boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT can be used, in all capital letters. A space between two terms is interpreted as the Boolean operator AND.
- Double quotes can be used to find a phrase, that is, at least two words or parts of words consecutive in the text. You can include a space at the beginning to restrict the search to the exact first word of the phrase. Asterisks and double quotes can be combined.
- Note that the search is insensitive to diacritical marks; that is, a word containing an accented letter is interpreted as the same as the one without the accent, or with any other diacritical variant.
- Note also that the search is sensitive to punctuation; that is, false negatives are expected when punctuation immediately follows a searched word (or when punctuation is found between words, in phrase search). Searching for roots with asterisk is therefore recommended.
- You can select any number of centuries in which to search. You can choose to have matched lines of the text shown by default in the search results. If the relevant box is unchecked, matched lines will be hidden until you click "see matches" to show them.
